Coach no.30

We were asked to restore the upholstery in one of the first Underground carriages to run on the Northern Line in 1890 — now displayed at the London Transport Museum, Covent Garden.

To return the high-backed seats to their original condition, we removed the calico lining, damaged fillings and nylon velvet covers that were added in the 1970s. Next, we fitted new hessian and re-applied as much of the original horse-hair filling as possible.

We then covered the backs in calico and velvet to match the seats, and replaced the buttons as they would have been when they were first installed.
