R.W Winfield Rocking Chair

This wrought iron rocking chair is an evolution of a design first shown by R.W Winfield at Crystal Palace in The Great Exhibition of 1851. It was brought to us in need of a full restoration.

To bring the iron frame back to life, we removed the rust with fine wire wool and applied a protective bee’s wax coating to revive its original shine.

For the upholstery, we re-worked as much of the existing horsehair filling as possible and added a new hand-stitched scrim to reinstate the collapsed edge roll.

Having re-established the chair’s shape, we replaced the top cover with semi-aniline hide — hand-stained to match the original leather.

We then used the same traditional methods for the arms, covering over the preserved, original fillings.
